Mate, 12X16, Oil on hardboard

Mate, pronounced Mah- teh with stress on the first syllable, is practically the national drink in Argentina,  it is prepared from steeping dried leaves of yerba mate (llex paraguariensis) in hot water.
The gourd is partly filled with the yerba mate, the water heated to no more than 75 degrees C, then enough water is poured into the gourd for one or two sips from the bombilla(straw),  the process is then repeated and passed from person to person until the yerba has no more flavour.
Claudia and I have this every day with toast or cookies mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

  1. I heard that traditionally South Americans sweeten their yerba mate with stevia...I'm pretty sure the only brand of yerba mate that is sweetened with stevia marketed in the U.S. in Wisdom of the Ancients.
